Get Certified

The NAECB exam is a voluntary testing program used to assess qualified health professionals knowledge in asthma education. It is an evaluative process that demonstrates that rigorous education and experience requirements have been met. Certification is voluntary and is not required by law for employment in the field, although some agencies may use AE-C® certification as a basis for employment, job promotions, salary increases, or other considerations.

Important News about the NAECB AE-C Examination, Effective 9/1/2010

The NAECB’s AE-C examination has been based on a Detailed Content Outline (DCO) that was developed from a job analysis survey performed in 2000 when NAECB was formed. The Detailed Content Outline is also known as the examination matrix and is the list of task statements about the role of an asthma educator. The outline can be found in Certified Asthma Educator Candidate Handbook. In 2008, the NAECB undertook a job analysis study to update examination content. A new DCO was developed, which bears many similarities to the first outline, but there are some changes.

Beginning September 1, 2010, candidates taking the Certified Asthma Educator (AE-C) Examination will take a new version of the examination that will be based on this new DCO. Prior to that date, the examination will continue to be based on the original DCO. The NAECB website is the official location for accurate information regarding the DCO, both the original and the new one.

During the period leading up to September 1, 2010, both versions of the DCO will be posted and available. The current outline was released in 2001. The new outline is dated 9/1/2010. Click here to download the new outline. Candidates preparing for the AE-C Examination in the next few months should take care to study from the outline linked to the examination they will take. For example, individuals taking the examination prior to September 1, 2010 should refer to the original DCO and individuals taking the examination on September 1, 2010 and thereafter should refer to the updated DCO, dated 9/1/2010.

An updated Candidate Handbook is also under development and expected to be available in the next 30 days. The revised Candidate Handbook will reflect information from the new DCO. When it is posted, there will be two versions of the Candidate Handbook posted until September 1, 2010. After that date, only the revised Candidate Handbook and the new DCO will be available.

NAECB Celebrates Its Ten-Year Anniversary!

The Board of Directors for the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) is proud to announce the celebration of our Ten Year Anniversary in 2010. The first meeting of the Board of Directors for NAECB was held in September 2000, at which time officers were selected and bylaws were approved. There has been significant progress for the organization over the past 10 years. There are currently more than 3000 individuals with the AE-C credential and the process of recertification has started for the first certificants. Within the next few months, a report will be published highlighting the NAECB's activities and accomplishments during its history and specifically for 2009-10.  The Board of Directors expresses our appreciation to everyone who has supported the efforts to advance excellence in asthma education through the certified asthma educator (AE-C) process.

Recertification

AE-C certification began in 2002. With a 7 year certification period, those who were certified in 2002 and 2003 will need to re-take the examination prior to their expiration date in 2009 and 2010 to maintain their AE-C certification.

Register for the exam by clicking on this link.

The American Association Respiratory Care will award 10 hours of Continuing Respiratory Care Education (CRCE) for individuals successfully recertifying their AE-C credential. The NAECB will complete the necessary paperwork upon request. Please contact the NAECB if CRCE credit is desired.
