Taking the Test

The NAECB Examination is delivered via computer at over 110 AMP Assessment Centers geographically located throughout the United States (Find an Assessment Center). There are no application deadlines and a candidate who meets eligibility requirements may submit an application and fee at any time. The examination is administered by appointment only Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Candidates are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.  There is a 3 1/2 hour time limit on the examination.

If you have never taken an online test before, you may Take A Sample Computerized Exam.  This sample test is not an indication of the kind of questions or material that will be covered in the asthma educator examination.

NEW!!! SELF-ASSESSMENT EXAMINATION

A Self Assessment Examination (SAE) is now available to provide additional resources for test preparation at a cost of $65. How To Register
1.  Candidates can register for the exam online (Click here to register Online - This will take you to another website) .

2.  You can also submit a paper application to NAECB Examination, Applied Measurement Professionals, Inc., 18000 W. 105th Street, Olathe, KS 66061. Click here to obtain the candidate handbook which contains a paper application for NAECB exam. For further information, you may call the Candidate Services Department at (888) 519-9901. 

All candidates must review and accept the Code of Conduct during the registration process.  Failure to do so will prevent registration.

Recertification (every seven years)  $295

Linda B. Ford, MD Scholarship

The Linda B. Ford, MD Scholarship is a partial award ($200) given yearly for two qualified individuals to assist in the examination fees. The application is available in the spring each year on the website. 

Repeating the Examination

If you do not pass the examination on the first attempt, you may reschedule a reexamination appointment within one year of your application date by contacting AMP at www.goamp.com or 1-888-519-9901.  Repeat candidate fees apply ($195.00) for each time the examination is repeated. 

There is a waiting period of ninety (90) days between examination attempts with a maximum of three (3) attempts in a one (1) year period.  In the case of extenuating circumstances, candidates may petition the NAECB.  If the time has exceeded one year since the date of your application to NAECB, you will need to apply to the NAECB again for permission to take the NAECB examination with all the associated fees ($295.00).

Recertification

Re-certification by examination will be required every seven years and will cost $295. Certificants may renew their certification by re-examination only up to one year prior to the expiration of initial certification. Outcome studies to evaluate the effectiveness of education by a Certified Asthma Educator will be performed to assess the benefit of this process and to help guide the re-certification process. 

Eligibility 
There are two kinds of eligibility.  A candidate must fulfill ONE of the requirements.

1. Licensed or credentialed health care professionals OR

2. individuals providing professional asthma education and counseling with a minimum of 1,000 hours experience in these activities.

The following is a list of those currently licensed or credentialed health care professionals that may be admitted to the examination under the first requirement:

Physicians (MD, DO)

Physician Assistants (PA-C)

Nurse Practitioners (NP)

Nurses (RN, LPN)

Respiratory Therapists (RRT, CRT)

Pulmonary Function Technologists (CPFT, RPFT)

Pharmacists (RPh)

Social Workers (CSW)

Health Educators (CHES)

Physical Therapists (PT)

Occupational Therapists (OT)

Exam Content
The examination is based upon seven major content areas. Each of the content areas is briefly described and followed by an outline of the topics included in the area in the NAECB candidate handbook. In addition, the number of test items devoted to each major content area is noted. The examination is composed of 175 items. (150 scored items, 25 pre-test items).

Each test item on the examination is categorized by a cognitive level that a candidate would likely use to respond. These categories are

  1. Recall: The ability to recall or recognize specific information is required.
  2. Application: The ability to comprehend, relate or apply knowledge to new or changing situations is required.
  3. Analysis: The ability to analyze and synthesize information, determine solutions and/or to evaluate the usefulness of a solution is required.

The sample items in the candidate handbook are only examples to demonstrate the cognitive levels (i.e. recall, application, and analysis/evaluation) of questions on the AE-C examination.  Candidates are encouraged to review the examination matrix in the candidate handbook for a comprehensive list of the test's content and to assess their study needs prior to taking the examination.
